Annie Goldson
New Zealand director Dr. Annie Goldson has been making award-winning films for over 20 years, starting with shorts and video installations whilst living in America. She has written and directed for television, including the series Counterterror, which she directed two episodes of. She made the 2002 film Georgie Girl, Sheilas 28 Years On; Seeing Red and Wake. She came to international prominence with the 1999 feature-length documentary Punitive Damage. That film examined a mother’s fight for justice after her son died at the hands of the Indonesian military during a demonstration against the occupation of East Timor. It received widespread acclaim and was picked up worldwide. Her 2008 documentary An Island Calling examined the killings in Fiji of the then-Director General of Fiji Red Cross and his gay lover; and 2011’s Brother Number One again returned to the emotional landscape of loss, examining Kiwi Olympic rower Rob Hamill’s trip to Cambodia to revisit his brother who was killed by the Khemer Rogue.
